Lesson 1 – Genesis 6: 5-18

We all probably remember the story of God creating the world.  Do you remember what God said after each beautiful bit of creation came to be?  God said, “it is good.”

God so loved creation.  And it was a really sad moment when God walked among the people and saw how selfish and mean and hurtful they had become.

God felt like she had made a big mistake.  God felt like the world needed a new start.

You know how it is when you make a mistake, maybe in spelling or in math?  Do you erase it?  What do you do if it something you did to make mom or dad sad - do you say “I’m sorry, I’ll do better.”  Yeah, we all do, I say to God I’ll do better all the time.

Well God decided to say “I’m sorry” and to erase this creation and just start over and hope for a better tomorrow.

But there was this one fellow that god thought about, a guy named Noah.

God saw that Noah tried very hard to live a faithful life.  And Noah tried to get his family to live a faithful life, too.  It was difficult because most of his neighbors were ignoring God’s good gifts.

So God gave Noah a big job – God asked Noah to help him rebuild, remake creation – and I mean all of it – not just a backyard garden or some little flower bed – but ALL OF IT!

God asked Noah to build a big boat, an ark.  Noah was a pretty good carpenter but this was a strange message, Noah said to God “build a what?”

Oh and then Mrs. Noah came out and was she confused.  Here is Noah with his normal job to do out in the field talking about building an ark – a what?

But Noah built the ark not knowing exactly why or really what would it mean to him.

Mrs. Noah didn’t understand and said to Noah,  “Get back to your job, we have children and they have children and who else can provide for them?”

But Noah who had listened to God told his wife to listen, to him, and through him, to God, and to gather up each of their three sons and their wives and children, and to be ready to listen to God and to be led to a place of safety in the coming storm.

So this is what Noah and his family did, they listened to God and made themselves ready to go where God would lead them.

Lesson 2 – Genesis 7: 1-10

Remember Noah – here he is with his wife and family, his three sons and their wives and children

Noah was the one person god knew he could ask to help rebuild Creation.  Noah was a person God saw trying to live a faithful life even when all of his neighbors were ignoring God.

So God gave Noah a big job.  I bet you think building the ark was the big job.  No, that was pretty easy once Noah got the hang of sawing and nailing and measuring in cubits.

The big job was to believe, to listen to God and to act in faith because really nothing God told Noah made any sense.

I mean it wasn’t even raining, there wasn’t a cloud in the sky for as far as you could see.  It hardly ever rains in the desert and when it does people are happy and they dance and fill up water jars.

And then there was answering all the questions people were asking him – even Mrs. Noah said, “build a what, for what – a flood, oh come on.”  She thought Noah had been out in the sun too long.  And other people thought Noah had lost his mind.

People laughed at Noah.  They made fun of him.  They laughed at the ark and the idea of gathering up all these pairs of animals.  What for?  Everything is fine.

But Noah knew what he was to do.  Noah listened to God and did everything God told him, down to the last cubit.  And Noah told his wife and sons and daughters-in-law and grandchildren to listen to God, too.

And he brought some of the pairs of animals to the place the ark was, just to be ready.

Noah and his family obeyed God.

Noah listened to God and let himself and his family be led by God.

Let’s think about that this week.

And you what, all the sudden a cloud came along and another and another and then, it began to rain.

Lesson 3 – Genesis 7: 11-16

Remember Noah – here he is with his wife and family, his three sons and their wives and children

Noah was the one person god knew he could ask to help rebuild Creation.  Noah was a person God saw trying to live a faithful life even when all of his neighbors were ignoring God.

What happened at the end of last weeks lesson?  Yes, it began to rain.

Noah had gathered up his family and began to gather the animals, all to be ready to go into the ark.

And now it is raining.  What did the Bible say, “the sky opened like windows, and rain poured down for forty days and nights.”

It rained so much that the water came not only from the sky but it began to gush up from the Earth

People didn’t think Noah was so crazy anymore.  But it was too late.

Noah and his three sons and their wives and children opened the door to the ark (open door) and they prepared the animals to go in.

Noah did what God told him to do and he took two of every kind of animal with him, one a male and one a female.  Why did God tell Noah to do that?  Mommy and Daddy animals.

So now the door is open and Noah and his family and all of the animals are ready to go on board.

And when all were safe on the Ark, God closed the door.

Lesson 4 – Genesis 7: 17-24

Remember Noah – here he is with his wife and family, his three sons and their wives and children.

Noah was the one person god knew he could ask to help rebuild Creation.  Noah was a person God saw trying to live a faithful life even when all of his neighbors were ignoring God.

Noah did what God told him to do. Noah gathered up his family and gathered the animals, all to go into the ark.

And he took two of every kind of animal with him, one a male and one a female.

How does the ark look to you?  Pretty full – yes, that is how it looks to me.

It’s been raining how many days?  Forty.  How long were they on the ark?  150 days and nights.  That is about 5 months!

Can you see anything from the ark?  No, just water.

How does it feel to be on the ark?

If you were Noah how would you feel?

If you were an animal on the ark how would you feel?

If you were the little pink pig would you be afraid of the big orange tiger?  If you were the giraffe would you wish for more head room?

If you were God how would you feel?

Lesson 5 – Genesis 8: 1-12

Remember Noah – here he is with his wife and family, his three sons and their wives and children.

Noah was the one person God knew he could ask to help rebuild Creation.  Noah was a person God saw trying to live a faithful life even when all of his neighbors were ignoring God.

Noah did what God told him to do. Noah gathered up his family and gathered the animals, all to go into the ark.

And he took two of every kind of animal with him, one a male and one a female.

What did we hear in the Bible verse today?  God did not forget about Noah and the animals.

With all those long days with nothing but water to look at and not enough room on the boat do you think maybe Noah wondered if God forget him and the tigers and the bunnies and giraffes?

If you were on the ark would you feel like God forgot you?

But what did God do?  She sent a wind to blow and stopped the rain and all the places the water had gushed up from the earth.

And in time the ark came to rest on a high mountain top, much higher than land you could live on.

Noah knew to be careful so he sent out a bird, a raven to check on the land.  Why did Noah send out a bird?  Because the bird would look for a tree to nest in and that would tell Noah the flood was over.

But the raven came back, tired and happy to see Noah and the ark.

A week later Noah sent out a dove, a special white bird.  The dove flew back in the evening and guess what?  In its beak it had a twig from an olive tree!

So Noah knew then that the flood was over.  And the next time he sent out the dove, she didn’t come back.  Why?  She made a nest, a new place to live and have a family.

Lesson 6 – Genesis 8: 13 – 9:17

Remember Noah – here he is with his wife and family, his three sons and their wives and children.

Noah was the one person God knew she could ask to help rebuild Creation.  Noah was a person God saw trying to live a faithful life even when all of his neighbors were ignoring God.

Noah did what God told him to do. Noah gathered up his family and gathered the animals, all to go into the ark.

And he took two of every kind of animal with him, one a male and one a female.

And they were together all those long days and months on the ark.

But remember first one bird went out and found no home, then the dove went out and found a little bit of green – what? An olive branch And then the dove went out again and what?  Didn’t come back She made a new home, maybe the first one in the new creation!

Then God did a wonderful thing – he told Noah it was time to leave the ark, to trust the land.

What looks different today?  Look and tell me what is different from last week?

How would you feel if you were Noah and God said “it is okay, come out of the ark?”

How would the animals feel when Noah let them out of the ark, after all those months shut up, now they could see land!  How did the animals feel?

How do the animals feel now?  How do you feel?

What do you think Noah did when he got off the ark?  Was he happy?  Yes, he was so happy that the first thing he did was build an altar and thank God for his care all along the way.

Do you think that God was happy with Noah?

What did God do to show she was happy?  A rainbow

This rainbow is a symbol, something all of us can see and understand that will remind us that never again will God destroy life with water.

How do you think God feels about the rainbow?

How do you feel about the rainbow?

Now our story is completed.  Noah and his family and all of the animals are safe on wonderful new green land. Creation has been made new, as have we.
